E. H. Harriman first acquired the initial 9,300-acre Orange County parcel in 1886 for his weekend estate. He engaged the famous New York City architectual firm who later designed the New York Public Library and the Frick Collection.
Project construction started in 1904 and was completed in 1909, shortly before Mr. Harriman's death.
